This press note, signed by Prof. B. Srinivas, Member Secretary, and Sr. Prof. Kumar Molugaram, Chairman, is the official starting gun. If you want to become an Assistant Professor or Lecturer at any university or college in Telangana, this is the most important exam of your career.

This is not just another exam overview. This is a complete, research-backed guide with keyword intelligence, preparation strategy, and everything you need to rank, both in Google and in the actual exam.

What is TG SET 2026? (And Why It Matters More Than You Think)

The Government of India, as per its New Educational Policy, envisaged that candidates besides possessing minimum academic qualifications must qualify in a comprehensive test for obtaining eligibility for appointment as Lecturers and Assistant Professors. While UGC-NET is the national-level test, an eligibility test at the national level cannot completely represent subjects that are regional in character, hence State Governments were given the option to conduct their own SET for eligibility at the state level.

TG SET is that exam for Telangana. Pass it, and you are eligible for every Assistant Professor and Lecturer vacancy that opens up across Telangana’s universities and colleges.

TG SET 2026 Exam Pattern Paper-Wise Breakdown

The TG SET examination consists of two papers, both conducted in a single session through Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. All questions are objective type (MCQs). Each question carries 2 marks. There is no negative marking. Both papers are compulsory. Paper I is common for all candidates. Paper II is based on the subject selected by the candidate.

PaperNo. of QuestionsMarksDuration

Paper II1002003 Hours Total
Total1503003 Hours

Paper I is common for everyone and tests your teaching and research aptitude. Paper II is subject-specific, based on your postgraduate subject.

Paper I Syllabus — What You Will Be Tested On

Paper I is designed to assess the candidate’s teaching and research aptitude. The syllabus is broad and focuses on reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness. It checks the candidate’s understanding of teaching-learning processes, tests basic knowledge of research methodology and ethics, and tests reading and understanding ability through comprehension passages.

UnitTopic Area
Unit 1Teaching Aptitude
Unit 2Research Aptitude
Unit 3Reading Comprehension
Unit 4Communication
Unit 5Reasoning (including Mathematical)
Unit 6Logical Reasoning
Unit 7Data Interpretation
Unit 8Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Unit 9People, Development and Environment
Unit 10Higher Education System

This paper is where most candidates lose marks unnecessarily. Treat it seriously because 50 questions carrying 100 marks can make or break your qualification.

Paper II Subjects Offered

The TG SET examination is conducted in 29 subjects. These cover a wide range including Telugu, Hindi, Urdu, English, History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Geography, Philosophy, Psychology, Public Administration, Social Work, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Commerce, Management, Education, Library and Information Science, Mass Communication and Journalism, Law, Environmental Science, and Physical Education.

Candidates are strongly advised to appear in the subject of their Post-Graduation only.

Eligibility Criteria — Who Can Apply?

Educational Qualification

Candidates may apply if they have scored 55% marks (without rounding off) in a Master’s degree (M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., MBA, MLISC, M.Ed., M.PEd., MCJ, LLM, MCA, and M.Tech in CSE and IT only). Candidates belonging to BC, SC, ST, and Persons with Disability (PwD) categories who have scored at least 50% of marks in their Master’s degree (without rounding off) are also eligible.

Candidates appearing in the final year of their Master’s degree are eligible to apply provisionally.

Age Limit

There is no age limit for the TG SET examination. Candidates just need to fulfill the educational qualification requirements.

Special Relaxation

Ph.D. Degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed by 19th September 1991 shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e., from 55% to 50%) for appearing in SET. Candidates belonging to the third gender (transgender) are eligible to draw the same relaxation in fee, age, and qualifying criteria as are available to SC/ST/PwD categories.

Qualifying Marks — What You Need to Score

This is the most critical section. TG SET qualification works in a unique way and it is not just about a cutoff percentage.

The number of candidates to be qualified (total slots) for eligibility for Assistant Professor shall be equal to 6% of the candidates who appeared in both papers of TG-SET. The total slots shall be allocated to different categories as per the reservation policy of Government of Telangana, with a reservation of 33 and one third percent of slots in favour of women candidates in each subject and each category. In order to be considered for eligibility, the candidate must have appeared in both papers and secured at least 40% aggregate marks in both papers taken together for General (Unreserved) category candidates, and at least 35% aggregate marks for all candidates belonging to reserved categories.

CategoryMinimum Aggregate % (Paper I and II combined)
General / Unreserved / EWS40%
BC / SC / ST / PwD / Transgender35%

Scoring 40% is the floor, not the ceiling. Since only the top 6% of appearing candidates qualify, competition is fierce. In the 2024 exam, out of 33,494 registered candidates, 26,294 appeared, and only 1,884 qualified, achieving an overall qualification rate of 7.17%. You need to be in the top bracket of scorers in your subject.

Preparation Strategy — How to Crack TG SET 2026 in 5 Months

You have roughly 5 months until October 2026. Here is a battle-tested strategy.

Month 1 and 2: Build the Foundation Download the official syllabus from telanganaset.org. Get previous year question papers (2012 to 2025 are available on the official site). Study Paper I units with Teaching Aptitude and Research Methodology as the highest priority. Start with your PG subject for Paper II and cover the broad topics first.

Month 3: Deep Dive into Paper II Go subject by subject through the Paper II syllabus. Make short notes because TG SET is factual and concept-heavy, not calculative. Attempt at least 2 previous year papers per week to gauge where you stand.

Month 4: Mock Tests and Speed Solve full-length mock tests under 3-hour timed conditions. Focus on accuracy and since there is no negative marking, attempt all 150 questions. Identify weak areas and revisit them with focused revision.

Month 5: Revision and Answer Key Analysis Revise all short notes. Re-attempt 2025 and 2024 question papers. Focus on high-frequency topics that repeat across years.

Paper I Pro Tips Teaching Aptitude and Higher Education System are the easiest scoring areas so never ignore them. Data Interpretation problems follow predictable patterns, so practice 10 to 15 sets. ICT questions are basic and a few hours of study can fetch you 4 to 6 guaranteed marks.
