How to Book Train Tickets Fast on IRCTC in 2026
Booking a confirmed Indian Railways ticket on IRCTC requires knowing the exact opening times and being fully prepared before the window opens. Whether you are booking a General reservation 60 days in advance or a last-minute Tatkal ticket, the strategies below will maximise your chance of getting a confirmed seat in 2026.
1. General Reservation Booking (Advance Quota)
General reservation tickets open exactly 60 days before the journey date at 8:00 AM IST. This applies to all main quota classes including Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, 1AC and Chair Car.
- Be logged in and have your search ready by 7:55 AM — not at 8:00 AM
- Popular trains on busy routes like Rajdhani and Shatabdi sell out in 2 to 5 minutes
- Use the Master Passenger List to avoid typing passenger details manually
- Pre-fill the train search the night before and keep the results tab open
- The advance reservation period is 60 days (changed from 120 days in 2020)
2. Tatkal Booking — Everything You Need to Know
Tatkal is an emergency quota for passengers who need to travel at short notice. Seats are priced higher than regular fares due to a mandatory Tatkal surcharge that varies by class and distance.
- Tatkal AC classes (2AC, 3AC, CC, EC) open at 10:00 AM, one day before the journey date
- Tatkal Sleeper (SL) and Second Sitting (2S) open at 11:00 AM, one day before the journey
- Tatkal bookings have no full refund on cancellation in most cases
- ID proof of at least one passenger is mandatory for Tatkal tickets
- PNR is confirmed immediately when booking succeeds at the Tatkal window opening
- Tatkal surcharge for Sleeper is Rs. 10 per passenger per 100km, minimum Rs. 100
3. Premium Tatkal
Premium Tatkal uses dynamic pricing similar to airlines. The fare increases automatically as more seats are booked. It opens at 10:00 AM alongside regular Tatkal for AC classes and generally has better availability at a higher cost. There is no cancellation refund on Premium Tatkal tickets.
4. What To Do If Your Booking Fails
- Check your bank or UPI app immediately before retrying — amount may have been deducted
- IRCTC automatically refunds failed transactions within 3 to 7 working days
- Try alternate classes on the same train (3AC if 2AC is full, SL if 3AC is full)
- Waitlisted tickets frequently confirm before the journey date as passengers cancel
- Check alternate trains on the same route on the IRCTC train list page
- Consider booking from a nearby station if the boarding station is full
